What is alpha cellulose?
Alpha Cellulose is a high grade wood pulp made from trees. They are matte papers that have been refined to remove acid and lignin. This paper is usually used for fine art prints.
Acid-free and lignin-free paper (or board) is a purified material that will not break down over time and become acidic.
Lignin is an organic substance found within wood pulp that helps bond the fibres together. Lignin enhances the acidity in paper which can cause the paper to become brittle and yellow as it ages. Paper that is lignin free remains acid free and therefore the will last considerably longer. Removing lignin is a costly process and also shortens the fibres within the pulp, however for papers that require preservation this is a necessary process.
